#TDS24 Preview: Leading the way to WC2030

Delivering the Dream

Hosting the FIFA World Cup presents a complex challenge, particularly regarding stadium infrastructure. Unless a host candidate opts to build entirely new stadia from scratch, the approach typically involves navigating a diverse mix of existing facilities, major rebuilds, completed refurbishments, and planned upgrades — each with unique dynamics, opportunities, and challenges.

In his upcoming presentation at #TDS24, César will share IDOM’s extensive expertise as design architects and engineers, drawing on real-world examples to inform host preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The discussion will cover a range of project types, including the use of existing stadiums like San Mamés (Athletic Club), major rebuilds such as Camp Nou (FC Barcelona) and New Romareda (Real Zaragoza), completed refurbishments at Monumental Stadium (River Plate), and planned refurbishments for Defensores del Chaco (Paraguay Federation bid).

About the speaker

César Azcárate is an Architect who graduated from the High School of Architecture of the University of Navarre in 1990 and holds a “cum laude” PhD from the same University in 2008. César complements his professional work by teaching Projects at the High School of Architecture of the University of Navarre since 1991.

César joined IDOM in 1992, becoming a partner in 2000, and currently, he is the Sports & Events Architecture Director. His professional activity has always been linked to the design and execution of Key Large Architecture projects at IDOM. This includes being the Leading Architect of the San Mames Stadium Project for the Athletic Club in Bilbao. This awarded project was the first in a series of engagements with football clubs in Europe and South America, taking a Lead Designer role for their Football specific stadia projects, including Everton FC, FC Barcelona, Club Atlético River Plate, Universidad Católica, Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro, Valencia FC, Levante UD, Villareal CF, Getafe CF, Real Zaragoza, Sevilla FC, and many others.
