#TDS25 Guest Spotlight: FC Sion’s Marco Degennaro

Ahead of TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit 2025, we caught up with Marco Degennaro, Director General of FC Sion.

FC Sion is set for a new stadium after the Swiss Super League football club, along with local authorities, concluded an 18-month process earlier this year by deciding a new build, rather than redevelopment of Stade de Tourbillon, is the best route to take.

Degennaro rejoined FC Sion in April 2024, following two separate spells with the club earlier in his career, firstly as Director of Sport from January 2011 to June 2013 and then Director General from April 2015 to June 2021.

At that point, Degennaro left to take up the same Director General role at current Challenge League club Yverdon Sport before returning to FC Sion.

TheStadiumBusiness: What is the vision behind FC Sion’s new stadium project, and the main goals it has to deliver on?

Marco Degennaro: “Our idea is to have a stadium that can be used not only for matches, but also as a venue for events in southern Switzerland and beyond.”

TSB: What is the current status of the project, and what are the next steps for it?

MD: “We have presented the project to the municipal (Sion) and cantonal (Wallis) authorities and things seem to be progressing well. There are no particular obstacles, even though we are talking about a project with a significant impact on the city and the canton.”

TSB: What are the most interesting, or challenging, aspects of the project?

MD: “Without a doubt, the possibility of quickly switching from a ‘football game’ configuration to a ‘space for music events or other events’ thanks to a unique and innovative system.”

TSB: What are you looking forward to most about TDS25?

MD: “To make new contacts and get to know the most important suppliers who could become partners in our project. To also obtain advice and ideas from the experiences of other participants.”

Join Marco, and 500-plus experts in design, engineering and delivery from around the world, only at #TDS25 on December 10-11 in Manchester.
