Etihad Stadium plans to become second largest stadium in UK
Delegates attending TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit 2016 are set to visit Etihad stadium on 2 Nov for a private, expert tour of the recently developed stadium and Training Campus and a chance to meet the project team. Manchester City FC have also just revealed plans to further extend their home ground taking capacity up to more than 61,000 – making them the second largest stadium in the UK behind Manchester United.
The addition of a third tier in the North Stand is now planned with work to begin next summer. Last year, the club spent in the region of £60m expanding the South Stand, but permission had already been sought to extend both ends and talks are now taking place for when contractors can begin the next stage of expansion.
Following the addition of 7,000 seats, City’s owners reportedly also plan to overtake the Red Devil’s in size with future plans to extend the East and West Stands as well.
The plans come after a hugely successful response to last year’s expansion with average attendance increasing by around 7,000. City Watch reported that with “98% of tickets sold on average for Premier League games, plus 41,000 season ticket holders and 10,000 on a waiting list, City chiefs believe the demand is there for a second expansion”.
Attendees of the Summit are invited behind The scenes At Manchester City FC’s World-Class Facilities. The Etihad Campus is a major sport, leisure, health, education and community development focused around 200 acres of reclaimed land in East Manchester. Inspired by the vision of its two principal investors, Manchester City Council and Manchester City Football Club – as well as that of Etihad Airways, the estate’s exclusive sponsor since 2008 – the Etihad Campus is an ambitious and innovative regeneration project that is transforming and reinvigorating an historic part of Manchester, creating a new centre of gravity for the area and providing visitors and residents alike with exciting opportunities in sport, leisure, health, education and employment. At the heart of the development is the recently expanded Etihad Stadium – a world-class, 55,000-seater football stadium and home to Manchester City FC. The campus also incorporates the City Football Academy, the Club’s world-leading training facility, as well as a new 7,000-seater stadium where its Women’s and Youth team matches provide an opportunity for year-round football.
