Project Preview: Tampere Central Arena

Tampere Central Arena is a project to build a new multifunctional-arena in the heart of Tampere, Finland.

The arena, including both business premises and apartment buildings, will regenerate the City of Tampere in many ways.

Besides being a home for Tampere Ice Hockey team, the arena will host concerts, other sport events, ice shows, figure skating, fairs and much more.

This fantastic project will be represented at TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit 2014 in Madrid by Tampere Central Arena’s Managing Director, Rikard Bjurstrom.

We caught up with him ahead of October’s Summit…

“I wanted to come along to the TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit because you can always learn from your colleagues. Although we are building an arena, we will face the same problems as stadiums and the solutions are very similar”.

“Our plan is to build an arena in the heart of the City of Tampere, next to the railway station, on a deck above the railway tracks”.

“The project was initiated by the City of Tampere but the goal is to have it financed by private investors and the City plan to put it out to tender later this year”.

“The idea was first talked about in 2009, the city plan was ready in 2011 and now we’re finally ready to start construction”.

It’s been quite a journey and now we have a confirmation from the highest court to start construction”.screenshot

“Our project is unique because of its location. It is the absolute centre of the city and we are producing a new building space that has never been there before”.

“We have already encountered several challenges with this project. First and foremost, we had extreme difficulty in proving that an arena can be multi-purpose and operational 24/7”.

Join Rikard Bjurstrom’s and his Tampere Central Arena project at TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit 2014 (Madrid, 29-30 October).

After all, those that do not learn from the past are destined to repeat its failings…
