Project Preview: York Community Stadium

York Community Stadium is a state of the art stadium which will form a community hub… the first of its kind in the city!

The ‘core’ facility will be an 8,000 all seater stadium, at a cost of £24million, which will be shared by York City Football Club and York City Knights Rugby League Club. The project involves the creation of a unique combination of sporting, health, educational facilities. screenshot

Joining us in Madrid for TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit is Tim Atkins, Community Stadium Project Manager, York City Council. Tim is the man in charge of overseeing the project, from concept to completion.

The project has also contributed towards the development of new sports facilities at the York St John University Sports Centre on Haxby Road. Supported by Council funding the University are providing, a floodlit 3G pitch plus additional facilities for rugby league training.

A new county standard athletics track (and field) has been provided at York University as a new home for City of York Athletics Club, in replacement of the previous track at Huntington Stadium.

Professional football and rugby have been a part of York’s sporting heritage for many years. Performance has varied over the years, and preceding the approval of planning permission both clubs have experienced lower average gates.

screenshotAmbitions for the stadium’s initial capacity were modest at 6,000 however attempts to provide a larger capacity have resulted in an 8,000 all seater stadium which offers the potential for reasonable growth should an increase in the success of the clubs occur.

York City Football Club’s recent promotion and FA Trophy success had a direct impact on the clubs attendances.

The Community Stadium itself will provide a high quality new home for both York City Football Club and York City Knights Rugby League Club and improve links to the new community leisure facilities provided at the site, which will include newly improved swimming facilities, gym, dance studio and a sports hall with spectator seating.
