Tottenham Hotspur granted permission for mega-basement underneath new stadium

TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit will host more than 40 global sports venue projects this October, one of them being Tottenham Hotspur’s New Stadium Development.

Ahead of their attendance in London this October, they have announced that they have been granted permission for a basement underneath their new 56,000-seater stadium – in a move which could help rumoured plans to play host to an NFL franchise.

The consent, granted after a meeting of the London Borough of the Haringey Planning Sub-Committee yesterday, will allow for the player changing rooms on the ground floor to be extended. With 53 players in an NFL squad, the extra space make hosting any London-based NFL franchise that much easier.

The space freed up on the ground floor will also be used for additional media facilities.

The Premier League club suggest that a car park that had been planned for the ground floor will now move into the mega-basement along with storage.

Chairman, Daniel Levy, said: “We are delighted that this application has been approved and are grateful for the continued support of the Council for this landmark project.

“We shall, in the coming weeks, be providing further information on these updated elements with the intention of carrying out a period of consultation during the summer and submitting planning applications later in the year. As we have stated previously, these updates will be running in parallel with the works continuing on the ground.”

The basement comes amid a growing property trend in the capital to maximise space by building down as well as up.

The stadium is due to be completed in time for the 2018/19 season.
